Commodore David Letts joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1982 and spent the early part of his career in a series of supply/logistics postings, culminating in a charge appointment as the Supply Officer of HMAS BRISBANE from 1994-96. After leaving BRISBANE he served in Navy HQ as a legal officer before transitioning to the newly formed tri-Service legal organisation in mid-1997. Commodore Letts was the Fleet Legal Officer from Dec 1999 – Jan 2002, immediately followed by a six-month deployment to East Timor as the Chief Legal Adviser to the UNTAET/UNMISET Force Commander during the period when East Timor achieved independence. Commodore Letts spent eighteen months as a member of the Directing Staff of the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies during 2003/4 prior to deploying to Iraq where he served as Chief, International Law and Deputy Staff Judge Advocate in the Multi-National Force HQ in Baghdad from late Jul – Dec 04. He returned to Canberra in Jan 05 to become a member of the Chief of Navy’s personal staff as Chief Staff Officer to Chief of Navy. Commodore Letts was promoted to his current rank in June 2007 when he assumed duty as Director General Navy People (RAN Representative).
Commodore Letts is a qualified solicitor, holds a B.Comm (UNSW) and LLM (ANU) and is interested in rugby, golf and spending time with his wife/three children (as well as their horses, dogs and guinea pigs).
